How to Grow Yuki Chinese Cabbage

It also grows well as a late summer to early winter crop where no frost occurs. Timing on spring and fall plantings should be trialed, as changing (increasing or decreasing) day length can be a trigger for bolting. Plan on needing to fertilize. Exposure to frost or prolonged temperatures below 50 F may result in bolting. Minimize potential problems by never letting the soil dry out. It is recommended to mulch after planting to reduce rots and improve soil moisture.

Note: Chinese Cabbage requires vernalization (intentional exposure to cold weather). Keep in mind that bud differentiation and bolting result from low temperatures of 41 F for a week or 50 F for two weeks. For a spring harvest, transplant seedlings with 5-7 true leaves raised at 73-75 F during the day and over 53°F at night. Avoid planting brassicas in the same soil more often than every sixth year.
